Just – Journey to Hybrid Cloud

Virtrium helped Just Group deliver journey to Hybrid Cloud

Just Group is a specialist UK financial services group focussing on the retirement market.  They are a leading and established provider of retirement products and services to individual and corporate clients.

The Challenge

Formed in 2016 by the merger of Just Retirement and Partnership Assurance, the current Just IT infrastructure arrangements consisted of servers located in equipment rooms that were part of the corporate office locations. This equipment provided a mixed physical and virtual environment supporting the legacy business operations (Hyper-V for Retirement and VMware for Partnership). Over a three-year horizon Just planned to consolidate the applications portfolio and increasingly re-locate/design new applications to be “Cloud provisioned”, either via Private Cloud or Public Cloud in a “best fit” solution to meet business requirements and increasing regulatory compliance demands.

Virtrium’s Approach

Virtrium provided a team of subject matter experts to help develop the future state strategy, complementing the in-house team knowledge and experience. Once approved, the strategy was then taken to the market through a Request For Proposal procurement process, seeking commercial flexibility as more Private and Public Cloud services were consumed over term, a consistent “single pane of glass” approach to end to end service management and simplified, cost effective, Disaster Recovery arrangements that would meet regulatory and compliance requirements.

The Outcomes

The Virtrium team delivered a strategy, procurement, transition and transformation approach linked directly to business requirements, across three key activity areas:

  1. A strategy that leveraged existing assets and replaced these with alternative service arrangements when it became commercially viable to do so;
  2. Collection and consolidation of applications data that would inform the transition and transformation timetable;
  3. A formal and auditable procurement process, including extensive due diligence of supplier capabilities across:
  • Data Centres
  • Transformation and Technical skills
  • Networks and Infosec controls
  • Service Management.

Virtrium provided independent guidance, advice and support which has proved to be invaluable and kept us honest throughout.
